8th May: Liberation Day
Eighty-one years ago today, the Second World War came to an end in Europe. The 8 May 1945 marked the victory over Nazi tyranny, making this date not only cause for celebration, but also an opportunity to commemorate the victims and to reflect on the fragility of peace.
To mark this historic occasion in a fitting manner, an official commemorative event is being held in the Congress Hall of the Federal Chancellery on Ballhausplatz. In addition to speeches by members of the Federal Government, the event will feature musical accompaniment by a Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra ensemble, performing works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This year’s keynote address will be delivered by Ivan Krastev. The event will be moderated by Hannah Lessing, Managing Director of the National Fund.
The ORF will broadcast the ceremony live on 8 May from 11:00 am. Let us join together to take a stand against forgetting and support a peaceful Europe.
