Appeal by the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance (DÖW) for the verification of the names for the Shoah Wall of Names Memorial

The Shoah Wall of Names Memorial is currently under construction at Ostarrichi Park in the 9th District of Vienna. The names of the Jewish children, women and men from Austria who were murdered in the Shoah will be engraved on large stone tablets in memory of the over 64,000 who were robbed of their lives.

Over the course of many years of work, the DÖW has created a database in which the names of the Austrian Holocaust victims are recorded. This will form the basis for the new memorial. The DÖW is now asking the families of the victims to help verify the names.

We are happy to share the DÖW's appeal to view the Shoah victims' database online and to check that ancestors are (correctly) listed.

Shoah Wall of Names Memorial Vienna

Appeal for the verification of the names, July 2, 2020

Ahead of the construction of the Shoah Wall of Names Memorial in Vienna, the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance (DÖW), is calling on the descendants and relatives of Austrian Holocaust victims to consult its database to ensure that no name is forgotten.

The DÖW has been conducting research on the names of Austrian Holocaust victims for decades and its database will be relied upon during the construction of the memorial.
The names and dates available on the database are all based on information in official documents. The list of victims of the Holocaust includes former Austrian citizens and permanent residents and people who lived in Austria for more than 10 years. Therefore, it is possible that Austrian victims who were arrested and deported abroad may not be included in the current database.

In addition, any variation in the spelling of names may have arisen due to the different spelling of names used in the Habsburg monarchy by Hungarian, Slavic-speaking and German authorities. The spelling used by DÖW is based on the last valid spelling in the Austrian documents.

Any additions or corrections submitted by the deadline of August 10, 2020 will be considered for the Shoah Wall of Names Memorial. Victims registered after the deadline of will still be inscribed on another stele of the memorial.

The Shoah Wall of Names Memorial was initiated by Austrian-Canadian artist and Holocaust survivor Kurt Tutter and by the “Association for the Erection of a Shoah Wall of Names Memorial”. The project is being implemented in cooperation with the Austria Federal and Provincial governments, the City of Vienna, the Austrian National Bank, the National Fund of the Republic of Austria and the DÖW under the patronage of the President of the Austrian National Council.
