In memoriam Friedrich Zawrel (1929–2015)

Friedrich Zawrel’s was laid to rest in an honorary grave of the City of Vienna on 20 April 2015. To mark this sad occasion, the National Fund is publishing the story of his turbulent life. It is a story which is typical for many who, as children, were detained, abused or subjected to medical experiments in the institution “Am Spiegelgrund”.

Friedrich Zawrel passed away on 20 February 2015. The course of his life was closely intertwined with the history of Austria. Having been persecuted by the Nazi regime on grounds of “asociality”, his persecution did not end with the war in 1945. It was not until 1998 that people such as Friedrich Zawrel and Rudolf Karger who, as children, were detained, abused or subjected to medical experiments in the institution “Am Spiegelgrund”, were officially acknowledged as victims of National Socialism.
