Washington Agreement and General Settlement Fund for Victims of National Socialism

Symposium on 14 November 2022

25 Oct 2022

2021 marked the 20th anniversary of both the Washington Agreement – concluded between the Austrian Federal Government and the Government of the United States of America to settle questions of compensation and restitution for victims of National Socialism – and the establishment of the General Settlement Fund for Victims of National Socialism (GSF).

In April 2022, the General Settlement Fund, having completed its tasks, was formally dissolved by resolution of the Board of Trustees, bringing to an end one of Austria’s most large-scale projects to provide compensation and restitution for victims of the Nazis.

The symposium will be an opportunity to take stock, while also offering an insight into the current implementation status of the agreed measures and an outlook on future challenges. The Agreement’s former negotiators, political decision-makers, those responsible for implementing the compensation and restitution measures, and scholars who have researched and published on the subject, will all have a chance to speak on the subject.
