The National Fund presents FOGIS

13 Nov 2019

FOGIS stands for Fonds-Geo-Information-System (Fund geo-information system) and is the new geo-information portal of the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism. It can be accessed online at https://maps.nationalfonds.org.

On an interactive map, FOGIS displays the locations of the projects subsidized by the National Fund, the properties dealt with in the decisions of the Arbitration Panel for In Rem Restitution, and the Jewish cemeteries and stones of remembrance commemorating the victims of the Nazis.

All information is provided in English and German.

  • FOGIS provides information on over 2,000 projects that have been subsidized by the National Fund. For each project there is a brief description, the name of the project organizer and a link to the project database and the National Fund website, which contain more detailed information and photos.
  • FOGIS displays the location of the cadastral districts in which the properties ruled on in the approx. 1,500 decisions of the Arbitration Panel are situated.
  • FOGIS brings to light 64 Jewish cemeteries in Austria. It contains a brief description of each cemetery; for many cemeteries there are also photos and a list of the property parcels they comprise, which are visualized on the map. There are links to the database on the website of the Cemeteries Fund, which contains a wealth of detailed information on each cemetery such as the address, size, owner, list of property parcels, information on monument protection and on restoration projects.
  • With FOGIS it is now possible for the first time to gain an overview of all of the stones of remembrance commemorating the Nazis’ victims in Austria. It provides information on the victims to whom the stones are dedicated – their names, dates of birth and death, place of death – and links to further information on the websites of the organizations or initiatives responsible for them. There are also photos of many of the stones. As of 8 November 2019, in memory of the pogroms that took place in the night of 9/10 November 1938, information has been available online for approx. 3,500 victims and victim groups at around 1,150 locations in Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria and Vorarlberg. More information on the stones of remembrance is continually being added.

With FOGIS, even the route to accessing the information is a visual experience:

Whatever you are looking for – a project subsidized by the National Fund, a plot of land recommended for restitution by the Arbitration Panel, an out-of-the-way Jewish cemetery or a specific stone of remembrance – FOGIS users can navigate their way to the location they are looking for: FOGIS zooms in on the exact location either from a world map via an visual of the world’s countries or from a map of Austria via a visual of the Austrian provinces.

Despite the large volume of data it contains FOGIS is highly user-friendly:

The written information and photos are clearly displayed in a sidebar to the right of the map. Using the search box, users can search either the entire FOGIS data worldwide or the data for a specific country or Austrian province. Users can also choose from a number of maps, including orthophotos/satellite photos. It is also possible to select a specific data layer, to zoom in and to use your own location on mobile devices.

The web application uses geo-data provided by the Federal Office for Metrology and Surveying, the City of Vienna, basemap.at, mapbox.com and Open Street Map and was created using Open Source technology.
