The great significance of St. Georgen/Gusen for the realization of the Nazi policies of persecution and extermination has not yet really found its way into the collective memory. DENK.STATT Papa Gruber is an initiative, supported by an association, which aims to broach the issue of the Nazi past in St. Georgen/Gusen, to make it the subject of discussions and visualizations. “Bergkristall” was the cynical code name for the 50,000 m² network of tunnels built in St. Georgen an der Gusen from early 1944. During the Nazi rule, around 80,000 people were interned on the parochial territory of St. Georgen an der Gusen, around 40,000 of whom met a violent death. They include the priest and resistance fighter Johann Gruber, who assisted many of his co-prisoners through his brave deeds until his death. He is the guiding figure for this project, he represents thousands of other victims of Nazi terror. DENK.STATT Papa Gruber, with the artistic project PASSAGE against OBLIVION and numerous events discussions and collaborations, sees itself as an educational project which seeks new forms of public debate surrounding the Nazi rule in St. Georgen beyond the classic memorial. The artistic intervention is under no circumstances a capstone. Instead it wants to make remembrance something to be experienced as an active process, which needs people who remember. No object, art work or place can assume this social responsibility.

Die enorme Bedeutung von St. Georgen/ Gusen für die Realisierung der NS-Verfolgungs- und Vernichtungspolitik hat in das kollektive Gedächtnis noch wenig Eingang gefunden. DENK.STATT Papa Gruber ist eine Initiative, getragen durch einen Verein, die sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat, die NS-Vergangenheit in St. Georgen/ Gusen zu thematisieren, diskutieren und vor allem auch zu visualisieren. „Bergkristall“ war die zynische Tarnbezeichnung für die ab Anfang 1944 in St. Georgen an der Gusen/ OÖ realisierten etwa 50.000 m² großen Stollenanlagen, in der hunderte Flugzeugrümpfe produziert wurden. Während der nationalsozialistischen Gewaltherrschaft waren in den Konzentrationslagern auf dem Pfarrgebiet von St. Georgen an der Gusen ungefähr 80.000 Menschen inhaftiert, von denen etwa 40.000 gewaltsam zu Tode kamen. Unter ihnen befand sich auch der Priester und Widerstandskämpfer Johann Gruber, der bis zu seinem Tod durch sein mutiges Handeln vielen Mithäftlingen half. Er ist die Leitfigur für dieses Projekt, er steht stellvertretend für tausende andere Opfer des NS-Terrors. DENK.STATT Papa Gruber mit dem künstlerischen Projekt PASSAGE gegen das VERGESSEN sowie zahlreichen Veranstaltungen, Diskussionen und Kooperationen versteht sich als Vermittlungsprojekt, das abseits einer klassischen Denkmalsetzung neue Formen der öffentlichen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Gedächtnis an die NS-Gewaltherrschaft in St. Georgen/ Gusen sucht. Die künstlerische Intervention ist keinesfalls Schlussstein, vielmehr möchte sie Erinnerung als aktiven Prozess erlebbar machen, der Menschen braucht, die sich erinnern. Kein Objekt, kein Kunstwerk oder Ort kann diese gesellschaftliche Verantwortung übernehmen.
