The Jewish Museum is not a Holocaust museum, but coming to terms with the Shoah is a constituent part of the museum. The area of the exhibition dealing with the Shoah as part of the new permanent exhibition, opening in November 2013, will be situated at the beginning of the second floor, which deals with Viennese Jewish history up to 1945. This position at the beginning of the largest chapter of Jewish history reflects the fact that the Shoah actively, although mostly unconsciously, shapes the view of the entire Jewish history, even 70 years after World War II. The part of the exhibition focusing on the Shoah at the Jewish Museum Vienna investigates the special situation in Vienna in the years 1938–1945. The exhibition tells of what happened to Viennese Jews during these years, how Adolf Eichmann and his helpers’ system of expulsion, looting and finally deportation affected the Jewish community and what and how the surviving Viennese Jews remember about this time. The Museum is also aware of the special situation in Vienna; that there is barely any other museum in the city dealing with the Shoah or the years 1938–1945. Therefore, the Jewish Museum will portray the Shoah primarily from the Viennese Jewish perspective in such a way as to demonstrate the multi-perspectivity of the events.

Das Jüdische Museum Wien ist kein Shoah-Museum, doch die Auseinandersetzung mit der Shoah ist ein konstitutiver Bestandteil des Museums. Der Ausstellungsbereich zur Shoah innerhalb der im November 2013 eröffnenden neuen permanenten Ausstellung wird am Beginn des zweiten Obergeschoßes stehen, das die Wiener jüdische Geschichte bis 1945 beleuchtet. Diese Position am Beginn des größten Kapitels der neuen permanenten Ausstellung reflektiert die Tatsache, dass die Shoah die Betrachtung der gesamten jüdischen Geschichte auch bald 70 Jahre nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs bewusst, meist jedoch unbewusst mitprägt. Der Schwerpunkt des Ausstellungsbereichs zur Shoah im Jüdischen Museum Wien geht den Fragen nach der besonderen Situation in Wien in den Jahren zwischen 1938 und 1945 nach. Die Ausstellung informiert darüber, was mit den Wiener Jüdinnen und Juden in diesen Jahren geschah, wie sich das von Adolf Eichmann und seinen Helfern entworfene System der Vertreibung, Beraubung und schließlich der Deportation auf die Wiener jüdische Gemeinde auswirkte und woran und in welcher Weise sich die überlebenden Wiener Jüdinnen und Juden an diese Zeit erinnern. Das Museum ist sich auch der besonderen Wiener Situation bewusst, dass es kaum andere Museen in dieser Stadt gibt, die die Shoah bzw. die Jahre zwischen 1938 und 1945 thematisieren. Daher wird das Jüdische Museum Wien die Shoah vor allem aus der jüdischen Wiener Perspektive in einer Form beleuchten, die die Multiperspektivität der Ereignisse begreifbar macht.
