Ein Oral-History-Video-Projekt im Rahmen der neuen permanenten historischen Ausstellung im Jüdischen Museum Wien, 2012/2013

 

This project focuses on Viennese Jews’ recollections of the years 1938 to 1945. The museum’s team held many conversations, above all with people who remember their own experiences during this time; in a small part they spoke to people from the second and third generation, who pass on their memories of their parents and grandparents and reflect of the traditions of remembrance within their own families. The majority of the interview partners live in Vienna, or lived in Vienna for a while after 1945. The main focus of the questions in the interviews is the period between 1938 and 1945, their recollections and how they dealt with discrimination, persecution, communication within their own family and among friends, confrontation with their persecutors. They will also focus on questions relating to the artifacts on display, questions which express the exhibition’s narration and will be an integral rather than an additive part of the voice of the exhibition. Finally, they will also be asked about the time after the liberation and the return to or first visit to Vienna. The aim is the record the memories of the surviving members of the generation that experienced the Shoah as audiovisual material and to make it accessible to the visitors to the Jewish Museum Vienna at the media stations of the new permanent exhibition (opening November 2013).

Im Mittelpunkt dieses Projekts stehen die Erinnerungen Wiener Jüdinnen und Juden an die Jahre 1938 bis 1945. Das Museumsteam führt vor allem Gespräche mit Menschen, die sich an ihre eigenen Erlebnisse in dieser Zeit erinnern, zu einem kleinen Teil auch mit Menschen der zweiten und dritten Generation, die die Erinnerungen ihrer Eltern und Großeltern weitergeben und die Erinnerungstraditionen innerhalb der Familien reflektieren. Die Interviewpartner leben heute mehrheitlich in Wien oder haben nach 1945 eine Zeit lang in Wien gelebt. Der Hauptfokus der Fragen innerhalb der Interviews liegt auf der Zeit zwischen 1938 und 1945, auf den Erinnerungen und dem Umgang mit den Diskriminierungen, Verfolgungen, Deportationen, der Kommunikation innerhalb der eigenen Familien und im Freundeskreis, der Konfrontation mit den Verfolgern. Aber auch auf Fragen, die mit ausgestellten Objekten und deren Geschichten in Zusammenhang zu bringen sind, Fragen, die die Narration der Ausstellung zum Ausdruck bringen und ein integraler, nicht nur ein additiver Bestandteil der Ausstellungsstimme sein werden. Schließlich wird auch nach der Zeit der Befreiung bzw. der Rückkehr oder den ersten Besuchen in Wien gefragt. Ziel ist es, die Erinnerungen der heute noch lebenden Angehörigen der Erfahrungsgeneration auf audiovisuelles Material aufzuzeichnen und für die Besucherinnen und Besucher des Jüdischen Museums Wien im Rahmen der Medienstationen der neu zu errichtenden Dauerausstellung (Eröffnung November 2013) zugänglich zu machen.
