Memorial to those persecuted by the Nazi military justice

In December 2010 the City of Vienna resolved a memorial to those persecuted by the military justice of the Wehrmacht at a worthy location. In autumn 2012 the Ballhausplatz in the 1st District was chosen. Art in Public Spaces Ltd. was commissioned to implement the project by the City of Vienna. This included publishing a call to tender and the implementation of an international invited competition for ist realization, as well as the production and technical implementation of the winning design. The concept “X” by Olaf Nicolai was appointed winner by the jury. The memorial is comprised of a blue concrete sculpture with three steps going all the way around on every side and dimensions of 9.84m x 8.8m and a height of 1.65m. The individual steps are 55 cm tall and 60 cm deep. On the upper step, in galvanized cast steel letters there is an inscription "all alone" - a quote by Ian Hamilton Finlay, which can be read fromabove. The letters are 25 cm high, have been flush mounted and fixed with adhesive anchors.

Im Dezember 2010 beschloss die Stadt Wien, den Verfolgten der Wehrmachtsjustiz dauerhaft und an würdigem Ort ein Denkmal zu setzen. Als Ort wurde im Herbst 2012 der Ballhausplatz im ersten Bezirk festgelegt. Die Kunst im öffentlichen Raum GmbH (KÖR) wurde von der Stadt Wien mit der Umsetzung beauftragt. Diese beinhaltet die Ausschreibung und Durchführung eines internationalen, geladenen Realisierungswettbewerbs sowie die Produktion und technische Umsetzung des Siegerentwurfs. Als Ergebnis des Wettbewerbs wurde der Entwurf „X“ von Olaf Nicolai zum Sieger juriert. Das Denkmal besteht aus einer dreistufig abgetreppten, blauen Betonskulptur mit den Maßen 9,84 x 8,80 m und 1,65 m Höhe. Die einzelnen Stufen sind jeweils 55 cm hoch und 60 cm tief. Auf der obersten der drei Stufen steht in verzinkten und gegossenen Stahlbuchstaben die Inschrift „all alone“ – ein Zitat von Ian Hamilton Finlay, das von oben zu lesen ist. Diese haben eine Letterhöhe von ca. 25 cm, sind bündig in den Beton eingelassen und mittels Klebankern fixiert.
