Albert Sternfeld, a Jew who grew up in Vienna and Burgenland, arrived in England in 1938 on a Kindertransport. His parents, who were able to flee National Socialism to Palestine, had him follow them in 1940. In Palestine, in 1943, he signed up to the Royal Air Force although he was not yet 18. In the war, Albert, who was politically aware, observed the efforts of a few Austrians who founded a movement in exile for a “Free Austria”. In 1950, Sternfeld returned to Austria for the first time. His family’s experiences of compensation of their property which had been “aryanized” in 1938, shaped Sternfeld and determined his political sensibility. In 1966 he returned to Austria for good and devoted himself to the issue of compensation for aryanized Jewish property.

Albert Sternfeld, Jude, aufgewachsen in Wien und im Burgenland, kam 1938 mit einem Kindertransport nach England. Seine Eltern, die vor dem Nationalsozialismus nach Palästina flüchten konnten, ließen ihn 1940 dorthin nachkommen. In Palästina meldete sich 1943 der noch nicht 18-Jährige zur Royal Air Force. Im Krieg beobachtete der politisch wache Albert Sternfeld die Bemühungen einiger weniger ÖsterreicherInnen, im Exil eine Bewegung für ein 'Free Austria' aufzubauen. 1950 besuchte Sternfeld erstmals Österreich. Die Erfahrungen, die seine Familie mit der Entschädigung für das 1938 'arisierte' Vermögen machen musste, sollten Sternfeld prägen und seine politische Sensibilität bestimmen. Er kehrte 1966 endgültig nach Österreich zurück und widmete sein Engagement der Entschädigung arisierten jüdischen Vermögens.
