Project

Description

The “Visas for Life” program began in May 1994 in San Francisco. The original aim was to honor Chiune Sugihara, the Japanese diplomat who in 1940, as consul in Kaunas, Lithuania, issued thousands of Jews with visas, saving their lives. In the meantime, the project has resulted in a travelling exhibition covering over 25 diplomats who, by issuing visas against the instructions of their governments, saved over 250,000 lives in these difficult times. In total, research has shown that there were 120 diplomats who, independently of each other, were responsible for humanitarian deeds as a result of their inner understanding of humanity although endangering their careers and sometimes even their lives.
