The history of forensic medicine in Vienna 1938-1945

During the National Socialist era, the subject “Forensic Medicine” became much more highly valued. Experts became active in new fields of activity due to the racial ideology which dominated all aspects of life. New tasks included drawing up genetic reports, forensic doctors working at the Hereditary Health Courts and carrying out investigations for the police and army (assessment of self mutilation, infringements of international law etc.). The Association for the Social History of Medicine planned a project which provides a fundamental portrayal of the history of the Viennese Forensic Medicine Institutions during the National Socialist era.

Das Fach Gerichtsmedizin erfuhr in der NS-Zeit eine ungeheure 'Aufwertung'. Experten wurden in neue Tätigkeitsfelder einbezogen durch die in allen Lebensbereichen dominierende Rassenideologie. Zum erweiterten Aufgabengebiet zählte die Erstellung erbbiologischer Gutachten, die Tätigkeit von Gerichtsmedizinern bei den Erbgesundheitsgerichten sowie die Durchführung von Untersuchungen für Kriminalpolizei und Wehrmacht (Beurteilungen von Selbstverstümmelungen, Völkerrechtsverletzungen etc). Der Verein für Sozialgeschichte der Medizin plant ein Projekt, das eine Basisdarstellung der Geschichte des Wiener Gerichtsmedizinischen Instituts in der NS-Zeit erarbeitet.
