Erection of a memorial in honor of the Austrians executed in the Brandenburg prison in Havel-Gärden during National Socialism

Between 1940 and 1945, over 1700 prisoners were murdered by the National Socialist rulers at the Brandenburg prison in Havel-Görden, including over 80 Austrians. The Year of Remembrance occasioned the erection of a memorial stone in honor of the executed Austrians at the memorial grove in Brandenburg an der Havel. Moreover, the project provided the opportunity to – at least partially – negate the view, widely held in Germany, that Austria simply complied with the Germans and that there had been no resistance.

In der Justizanstalt Brandenburg an der Havel-Görden wurden zwischen 1940 und 1945 über 1700 Häftlinge durch die nationalsozialistischen Machthaber ermordet, darunter über 80 Österreicher. Das Gedenkjahr ist der Anlass für die Errichtung eines Gedenksteins zu Ehren der hingerichteten Österreicher auf dem Gedenkhain in Brandenburg an der Havel. Darüber hinaus bietet das vorliegende Projekt die Möglichkeit, der in Deutschland weit verbreiteten Ansicht, Österreich habe es sich 'gerichtet' und Widerstand habe es nicht gegeben - zumindest partiell - entgegenzutreten.
