Mrs. Ostermann, who was born and grew up in Vienna, was arrested in Dresden in August 1942 for being a so called “first grade half-caste” and was deported via Ravensbrück to Auschwitz. Once there, she managed by chance to gain a position as a writer in the registry office of the political department of the main camp. In these way, she was able to survive. The text for this book evolved from many interviews conducted by Martin Krist with Mrs. Ostermann about her life story. The focus of the conversations was her experiences in Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkenau, as well as her youth and life after the liberation.

Frau Ostermann, in Wien geboren und aufgewachsen, wurde als so genannter Mischling 1. Grades im August 1942 in Dresden verhaftet und über das KZ Ravensbrück nach Auschwitz-Birkenau deportiert. Dort gelang es ihr durch Zufall, in die Position einer Schreiberin am Standesamt der Politischen Abteilung im Stammlager zu gelangen. Dies ermöglichte ihr das Überleben. Der Text für dieses Buch entstand aus einer Vielzahl von lebensgeschichtlichen Interviews, die Martin Krist mit Frau Ostermann geführt hat. Der Fokus der Gespräche lag auf ihren Erinnerungen an Auschwitz und Auschwitz-Birkenau, sowie auf ihrer Jugend und ihr Leben nach der Befreiung.
