In winter 1993/94, shortly before the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration and extermination camps in early 1945, the photographer Erich Hartmann undertook an 8 week journey to the camps and memorials. Without any assistance (artificial light etc.) he photographed what remained. His pictures, silent black and white photographs, taken in winter without artificial lighting do not depict people, only hazy shadows. An oppressive atmosphere weighs down on the subjects of the photos.

Im Winter 1993/94, kurz vor dem 50. Jahrestag der Befreiung der Konzentration- und Vernichtungslager im Frühjahr 1945, unternahm der Photograph Erich Hartmann eine achtwöchige Reise zu den Lagern und Gedenkstätten. Er hat ohne jedes Hilfsmittel (künstliches Licht etc...) das photographiert was noch übriggeblieben ist. Seine Bilder, stille Schwarzweiß - Photographien, im Winter ohne künstliches Licht aufgenommen, zeigen keine Menschen, nur schemenhafte Schatten. Auf den Motiven lastet eine beklemmenden Atmosphäre.
