The State Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau is home to a series of national exhibitions established by different countries which form part of the memorial site. The Austrian memorial can also be found among these exhibitions. Since 1978, the Austrian memorial, the official exhibition of the Republic of Austria, portrays Austria as the “first victim” of the National Socialist regime. Since then, Austria – together with many other European countries and, after 1989, countries formerly under Russian rule – now views its history differently. The project related to the production of a scientific concept for the redesign of the Austrian exhibition in the State Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Das Staatliche Museum Birkenau beherbergt eine Reihe von nationalen Ausstellungen, die von verschiedenen Ländern errichtet wurden und die Teil der Gedenkstätte sind. Unter diesen Ausstellungen befindet sich auch die 'Österreichische Gedenkstätte'. Seit 1978 vermittelt die Österreichische Gedenkstätte als offizielle Ausstellung der Republik an diesem Ort dieses Bild Österreichs als 'erstes Opfer' des NS-Regimes. Mittlerweile hat aber in Österreich selbst - ebenso wie in vielen anderen europäischen Staaten und nach 1989 auch in den Ländern des ehemaligen sowjetischen Herrschaftsbereichs - eine Neupositionierung des Geschichtsbildes stattgefunden. Das Projekt bezieht sich auf die Erstellung eines wissenschaftlichen Konzepts zur Neugestaltung der Österreichischen Ausstellung im Staatlichen Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau.
