Austrians were prominent and numerous in their perpetration of the crimes committed by the National Socialist regime and played an important role in carrying out the mass murder of the Jews. According to Simon Wiesenthal, 40 percent of the staff and three quarters of the commanders in the extermination camps came from Austria. What contribution did the Austrian legal system make towards prosecuting the perpetrators of the Holocaust and in atonement for war crimes? These and related questions form the focus of the 13 articles in this volume, the empirical basis of which consists of 556 trials for National Socialist killing crimes. There are also a further 30 trials in which a legal and binding sentence was passed between 1956 and 1975.

Österreicher waren prominent und in großer Zahl an den Verbrechen des NS-Regimes beteiligt und trugen entscheidend zur Durchführung des Massenmordes an den Juden bei. Laut Simon Wiesenthal stammten 40 Prozent des Personals und drei Viertel der Kommandanten der Vernichtungslager aus Österreich. Welchen Beitrag leistete die österreichische Justiz bei der Verfolgung der Täter des Holocaust und bei der Sühne von Kriegsverbrechen? Hat die österreichische Nachkriegsjustiz bei der Strafverfolgung dieser Täter tatsächlich versagt? Diese und damit verbundene Fragen stehen im Mittelpunkt der 13 Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes, dessen empirische Basis 556 Prozesse wegen NS-Tötungsverbrechen bilden. Dazu kommen weitere 30 Prozesse, in denen zwischen 1956 und 1975 ein rechtskräftig gewordenes Urteil gefällt wurde.
