Creation of a database for the Association Stones of Remembrance

Erstellung einer Datenbank für den Verein Steine der Erinnerungen

 

The aim of the project is to produce a publicly-accessible database for all of the Stones of Remembrance that already exist, which will be continuously added to. Data will be collected as a first step to form the basis for the project. Eleven categories and five sub-categories are planned. These include the stone’s address, the text of the explanatory stone, the text of the wall plaque, the name, dates of birth, of escape, of deportation and of murder. The collection of data will comprise around 1,350 records with up to 15 categories. The methods for finding and recording data include research and a review of the brochures and photos of the stones, researching the deportation data at the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance and additional research in the databases of Yad Vashem and the Czech database for Holocaust victims, Holocaust records from ten ghettos and a genealogical database. The data, which will initially be saved as excel files, will be converted into an electronic database that will be accessible to the public from late 2016.

Das Ziel des Projekts ist die Erstellung einer öffentlich zugänglichen Datenbank für alle bereits bestehenden Steine der Erinnerung, die laufend ergänzt werden soll. Die Sammlung der Daten soll in einem ersten Schritt als Basis für das Projekt durchgeführt werden. Geplant sind 11 Kategorien und zusätzlichen fünf Subkategorien. Diese beinhalten unter anderem Adresse des Steins, Text des Erklärungssteins, Text der Wandtafel, Name, Geburtsdatum, Flucht, Deportation sowie Ermordung. Die Datensammlung wird etwa 1.350 Datensätze mit jeweils bis zu 15 Kategorien umfassen. Die Methoden der Datenerschließung und Datensammlung umfassen die Recherche und die Durchsicht der Broschüren samt Fotos der Steine, die Recherche der Deportationsdaten beim DÖW und ergänzende Recherchen bei Datenbanken von Yad Vashem und der tschechischen Datenbank für Holocaust-Opfer, Holocaust-Aufzeichnungen aus zehn Ghettos und eine genealogische Datenbank. Die Daten, die zunächst in Excel-Dateien gespeichert werden, sollen in eine elektronische Datenbank umgewandelt werden, die ab Ende 2016 öffentlich zugänglich sein wird.
