A child becomes snared in the National Socialists’ perfidious system, is humiliated, locked up and almost killed by racial hygienists. Friedrich Zawrel survived it all. However, after the collapse of the National Socialist dictatorship, when he tried to make a fresh start in the newly proclaimed Second Republic, the ghosts of his past continue to follow him in the form of former teachers, nurses, doctors and psychiatrists who have again secured places in the fields of law and medicine after the war. In 1975, Zawrel meets the former National Socialist doctor Heinrich Gross who had since been able to build a career under the patronage of the Federal Socialist Academics Austria as a court expert and Director of the Ludwig-Bolzmann Institute for research into abnormalities in the nervous system. Zawrel identifies himself. He reminds Heinrich Gross of the horrors to which he and his colleagues subjected the children in the euthanasia clinic “Am Spiegelgrund”. Gross has Zawrel put behind bars. He writes a report defaming Friedrich Zawrel, who has been charged with theft, as a remorseless repeat offender.

Ein Kind gerät in das perfide System der Nationalsozialisten, wird gedemütigt, eingesperrt und von Rassenhygienikern fast zu Tode gebracht. Friedrich Zawrel hat all das überlebt. Als er jedoch nach dem Ende der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur sein Glück in der neu ausgerufenen Zweiten Republik Österreich versucht, stehen die Gespenster der Vergangenheit aufrecht vor ihm, in Form von ehemaligen Erziehern, Pflegern, Ärzten und Psychiatern, die sich im Bereich Justiz und Medizin nach dem Krieg wieder ihren Platz gesichert haben. 1975 trifft Zawrel auf den ehemaligen NS-Arzt Heinrich Gross, der in der Zwischenzeit unter dem Schutz des Bundes Sozialistischer Akademiker Österreichs als Gerichtsgutachter und Leiter des Ludwig-Boltzmann-Institutes zur Erforschung der Missbildungen des Nervensystems Karriere machen konnte. Zawrel gibt sich zu erkennen. Er erinnert Heinrich Gross an die Gräueltaten, die er und seine KollegInnen den Kindern in der Euthanasieklinik 'Am Spiegelgrund' angetan haben. Gross lässt Zawrel als Zeugen verschwinden. Er schreibt ein Gerichtsgutachten, das den wegen Diebstahls angeklagten Friedrich Zawrel als gefühlskalten Wiederholungstäter diffamiert.
