Margaret Hönigsberg – after her marriage Hilferding-Hönigsberg – was not only the first woman in Austria permitted to study medicine; she was also the only woman to participate in Freud’s Wednesday Society, although she later followed the Alfred Adler school. As a politically involved intellectual and emancipated woman, she worked as a doctor in the workers’ districts of Vienna before being arrested by the Austrofascist Corporate State in 1934 and forced to give up her job as a school doctor. As a result of her marriage to the Viennese doctor Rudolf Hilferding, later the German Minister of Finance, she became an eyewitness to political events. From 1938, she was persecuted by the Nazis as she was Jewish and died in Theresienstadt.

Margaret Hönigsberg - nach ihrer Heirat Hilferding-Hönigsberg - wurde nicht nur als erste Frau in Österreich zum Medizinstudium zugelassen, sie nahm auch als einzige Frau an Freuds Mittwochgesellschaft teil, auch wenn sie sich später der Schule Alfred Adlers anschloss. Als politisch engagierte Intellektuelle und emanzipierte Frau arbeitete sie als Ärztin in den Proletarierbezirken Wiens, bevor sie durch den austrofaschistischen Ständestaat 1934 verhaftet wurde und ihre Funktion als Schulärztin niederlegen musste. Durch ihre Heirat mit dem Wiener Arzt Rudolf Hilferding, dem späteren deutschen Finanzminister, war sie auch eine Zeitzeugin des politischen Geschehens. Ab 1938 wurde sie von den Nazis als Jüdin verfolgt und kam in Theresienstadt um.
