20 June 2007 was the 60th anniversary of the day on which the Republic of Austria, represented by the Federal Chancellor Leopold Figl, handed over the grounds of the former concentration camp Mauthausen for the erection of a permanent memorial. In cooperation with the Austrian Camp Community Mauthausen and the Comité International de Mauthausen, the Mauthausen Committee Austria commissioned an oratorio from the well known contemporary composer Wolfgang R. Kubizek. The Mauthausen Committee Austria intended to carry out an international cultural project on a national level with performances of the oratorio “And all the dead died peacefully?” in the concentration camp memorial Mauthausen (world première) and in Melk, where one of the largest satellite camps of Mauthausen was situated between 1944 and 1945.

Am 20. Juni 2007 jährt sich zum 60. Mal der Tag, an dem an die Republik Österreich, vertreten durch den Bundeskanzler Ing. Leopold Figl, das Gelände des ehemaligen Konzentrationslagers Mauthausen zur Errichtung einer dauerhaften Gedenkstätte und eines Mahnmals übergeben wurde. Das Mauthausen Komitee Österreich (MKÖ) hat aus diesem Anlass in Kooperation mit der Österreichischen Lagergemeinschaft Mauthausen und dem Comité International de Mauthausen einen Kompositionsauftrag für ein Oratorium an den renommierten zeitgenössischen Komponisten Wolfgang R. Kubizek erteilt. Das MKÖ beabsichtigt ein internationales Kulturprojekt auf nationaler Ebene mit Aufführungen des Oratoriums '?und alle Toten starben friedlich?' in der KZ-Gedenkstätte Mauthausen (Welturaufführung) und in Melk, wo zwischen 1944 und 1945 eines der größten KZ-Nebenlager von Mauthausen bestand.
