Description
Egon Schwarz, forced into exile from his hometown in 1938 due to his Jewish origins embodies exile in his autobiography and in the focuses of his academic and literary life work better than almost any other Austrian intellectual. Schwarz fled to Bolivia in 1938 as a teenager, and later travelled to Chile and Ecuador. In 1949, he arrived in the USA and studies German and Romantic Philology. From 1961 until his retirement he worked as Professor for German Literature at Washington University in St. Louis/Missouri. An American Austrian book of appreciation was to dedicated to him for his 85th birthday.
