Description

In Bikernieki Forest on the eastern outskirts of the Latvian capital Riga, between 1941 and 1944 over 40,000 Jews political prisoners and Soviet prisoners of war were shot by the Nazis and their local helpers. A large number of the victims came from Austria. In Vienna, the Riga Initiative has been striving to achieve a suitable memorial in Bikernieki Forest. The construction plans were approved in Riga and submitted to the National Fund.

Im Bikernieki-Wald, am östlichen Stadtrand der lettischen Hauptstadt Riga, wurden zwischen 1941 und 1944 über 40.000 Juden, politische Häftlinge und sowjetische Kriegsgefangene von den Nazis und ihren einheimischen Helfern erschossen. Ein großer Teil der Opfer stammte aus Österreich. Seit mehreren Jahren engagiert sich in Wien die Initiative Riga für eine würdige Gedenkstätte im Bikernieki-Wald. Die Baupläne für die Gedenkstätte sind in Riga genehmigt worden und liegen dem Nationalfonds vor.
