Searching for long forgotten traces: Stock taking of the Jewish heritage in Burgenland and production of a guide on the sites of Jewish past

In 1938, there was a multitude of Jewish communities on the territory of present-day Burgenland. The seven communities on Esterházy territories (Schewa Kehilot/Eisenstadt, Kittsee, Frauenkirchen, Mattersburg, Deutschkreutz, Lackenbach und Kobersdorf) became the most important. In 1938, this culture, spanning back centuries, was erased from one day to the next. The stocktaking covere the whole of Burgenland. Focus was placed on the communities which still had religious communities in 1938. The results of this stocktaking were then used as a basis for the publication for a guide through the Jewish heritage of Burgenland and to the memorial sites for victims of National Socialism.

Auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Burgenlands befand sich bis 1938 eine Vielzahl jüdischer Gemeinden. Zu besonderer Bedeutung gelangten die auf Esterházyschem Gebiet liegenden Siebengemeinden (Schewa Kehilot/Eisenstadt, Kittsee, Frauenkirchen, Mattersburg, Deutschkreutz, Lackenbach und Kobersdorf). 1938 wurde diese jahrhundertealte Kultur mit einem Schlag ausgelöscht. Die Bestandsaufnahme soll das gesamte Burgenland umfassen. Der Schwerpunkt wird auf jenen Gemeinden liegen, in denen bis 1938 Kultusgemeinden bestanden. Aus den Ergebnissen der Bestandsaufnahme soll ein Führer durch das jüdische Erbe des Burgenlands und zu den Gedenkstätten für die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus gestaltet und publiziert werden.
