Hans Tietze came from the Vienna School of the History of Art and traced, in accordance with the principles of his great teachers, the connections between the history or art and intellectual history. He also wanted his book on Jewish Vienna to be understood in this context when he commenced his portrayal of the history of Viennese Jewry as a constituent part of the city’s history. The new edition of this standard work, with the original illustrations of the first edition is a tribute to a great and unjustly forgotten academic and to a work which is as important today as at the time it was written.

Hans Tietze ging aus der Wiener Schule der Kunstgeschichte hervor und spürte, den Prinzipien seiner großen Lehrer gemäß, den Zusammenhängen von Kunstgeschichte und Geistesgeschichte nach. So wollte er auch sein Buch über die Juden Wiens verstanden wissen, als er dranging, die Geschichte des Wiener Judentums als einen konstituierenden Bestandteil der Stadtgeschichte darzustellen. Die Neuausgabe dieses Standardwerks, mit Originalillustrationen der Erstausgabe, ist ein Tribut an einen großen und zu Unrecht vergessenen Wissenschaftler und an ein Werk, dessen Bedeutung heute noch genauso groß ist, wie zur Zeit seiner Entstehung.
