Project

Description

As far as we know today, during the night of the 1–2 February 1945 at least 419 Soviet officers attempted to escape the death block of Mauthausen concentration camp. Only 150 of them were able to make the first 800 meters, with the exception of eleven survivors they were hunted or “brought” to death in the following days by the SS, the Volkssturm (“People’s Unit”), the Landwacht (“country guards”), police, Hitler Youth and private individuals. The memorial is to serve as a reminder to remember the victims and to reflect on the fact that the terror of the Nazi era is not a phenomenon that is restricted to the past. The artist Prof. Herbert Friedl has already developed a design for the memorial. Events and a project of remembrance in the form of a “trail of images” through the town will lead people to the memorial. Discussions with surviving eyewitnesses will be held and published in the form of a film and a book.
