The editor researched over 500 families over a period of 15 years. The history of the Habsburg Monarchy from 1800–1918 was shaped by the rise of the Jewish bourgeoisie. Their contribution to economic, cultural and intellectual life was exceptionally great and shaped the identity of the multi-ethnic state. In 12 years of work and research, Georg Gargusch created a unique compendium of the Jewish bourgeoisie in Vienna. The complex genealogical portrayals on the basis of research carried out in archives throughout Europe are supplemented by introductory texts on each family in which the importance of specific individuals and the networks with other families are more closely examined. The portrayals often reach far back into the Biedermeier period and end with the destruction of this world in the 20th century.

Der Herausgeber hat über 500 Familien in 15 Jahren recherchiert. Die Geschichte der Habsburgermonarchie von 1800 – 1918 war geprägt vom Aufstieg des jüdischen Bürgertums. Ihr Anteil am wirtschaftlichen, kulturellen und intellektuellen Leben war außergewöhnlich hoch und trug zur Identität des Vielvölkerstaates bei. Georg Gaugusch schuf in zwölf Jahren Arbeit und Recherche ein einzigartiges Kompendium des jüdischen Großbürgertums in Wien. Die aufwendige genealogische Darstellung, die in Archiven europaweit erforscht wurde, wird durch Einleitungstexte zu jeder Familie ergänzt, in denen die Bedeutung einzelner Personen und die Vernetzung mit anderen Familien näher betrachtet werden. Die Darstellung reicht oft bis in die Biedermeierzeit zurück und endet mit der Vernichtung dieser Welt im 20. Jahrhundert.
