Fred Heller, born in Obersiebenbrunn, Austria, in 1889, was a respected columnist, theater critic and writer of popular spoken and musical comedies in Vienna of the 1920s and 30s such as “The Great Bluff” (1926) or “The Ministry is Offended” (1937). However, the “Anschluss” forced him to enter into a seemingly uncertain exile, which took him in 1939 to Montevideo, where he was able to reestablish himself relatively quickly. In September 1941, Heller founded “The Comedy” with the exiled German actor Albert Maurer, an acting company that regularly put on performances for the German-speaking and predominantly Jewish community in Montevideo. From 1942, Heller began to write weekly columns on the neighboring country of Uruguay for the “Argentinische Tagesblatt”, a German language newspaper in Buenos Aires,. His novel “Life Begins Again” (1945) can be considered a great feat of exile literature.

Fred Heller, 1889 im österreichischen Obersiebenbrunn geboren, wurde im Wien der Zwanziger- und Dreißigerjahren ein angesehener Feuilletonist, Theaterkritiker und Verfasser von populären Komödien und musikalischen Lustspielen wie „Der große Bluff“ (1926) oder „Das Ministerium ist beleidigt“ (1937). Der „Anschluss“ zwang ihn jedoch in ein scheinbar ungewisses Exil, das ihn 1939 nach Montevideo führte, wo er sich relativ schnell wieder etablieren konnte. So gründete Heller im September 1941 zusammen mit dem ebenfalls exilierten deutschen Schauspieler Albert Maurer „Die Komödie“, eine Schauspieltruppe, die regelmäßig Theater für die deutschsprachige und vor allem jüdische Gemeinde in Montevideo machte. Ab November 1942 fing Heller an, für das „Argentinische Tagesblatt“, eine deutschsprachige Zeitung in Buenos Aires, wöchentliche Beiträge zum Nachbarland Uruguay zu schreiben. Als große exilliterarische Leistung ist sein Erzählband „Das Leben beginnt noch einmal“ (1945) zu sehen.
