Project

Description

Following the Anschluss of Austria to Nazi Germany the cultural policies changed. The representative theater of the Nazis served Nazi ideology; it served representative purposes, while at the same time eliminating content that was not in keeping with Nazi doctrine, and ostracizing Jewish and politically non-conformist artists. The aim of the project is therefore to investigate and evaluate these little known areas of theater under Nazi rule in Austria – the activities of the “German Jewish Cultural Alliance, Vienna branch” and theatrical activities in labor camps, Mauthausen concentration camp and its satellite camps. In order to fill these gaps in the research we shall carry out fundamental research. On the basis of source material held at “The Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People”, we will address the following issues: the circumstances of the Jewish theatrical artists in Vienna; aims and activities of the “German Jewish Cultural Alliance, Vienna branch” in the field of tension created by the orders of the Nazi rulers, Adolf Eichmann in particular, the stance of the Vienna Jewish Community, and the needs and requirements of the Jewish artists.
