Lisa Malina has trawled all of the letters of Erich Korngold she can currently get her hands on for significant content with the aim of writing this letter publication. The two artistic families Korngold and Sonnenthal provide a scintillating insight into the era and into private and public events. Peppered with letters by artist friends to complete the overall picture, the collection reads like a Who’s Who of the first half of the 20th century: Maria Jeritza, Gustav und Alma Mahler, Giacomo Puccini, Bruno Walter, Richard Strauss, Paul Wittgenstein, Max Reinhardt und Helene Thimig, Joseph Marx, Marcel Prawy – to name but a few. The letters originate from various decades and shed light on a huge range of details from Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s life, much of which was previously unknown. The letters also give rise to new questions that will be addressed in future research projects.

Lisa Malina durchforstete den derzeit requirierbaren Briefbestand Erich Korngolds im Hinblick auf aussagekräftige Inhalte mit dem Ziel, diese Briefedition zu schreiben. Die zwei kunstsinnigen Familien Korngold und von Sonnenthal geben ein schillerndes Zeugnis sowohl der damaligen Zeit als auch der privaten und öffentlichen Ereignisse. Eingestreute Briefe von KünstlerfreundInnen ergänzen das Bild und lesen sich wie das Who's Who der ersten Hälfte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts: Maria Jeritza, Gustav und Alma Mahler, Giacomo Puccini, Bruno Walter, Richard Strauss, Paul Wittgenstein, Max Reinhardt und Helene Thimig, Joseph Marx, Marcel Prawy – um nur einige zu nennen. Die Briefe stammen aus verschiedenen Jahrzehnten und bringen zahlreiche Details aus Erich Wolfgang Korngolds Leben genauer zu Tage. Vieles davon war bisher nicht bekannt. Durch die gesichteten Briefe ergeben sich neue Fragen, die in künftigen Forschungsprojekten bearbeitet werden können.
