The Sobibor Uprising took place on 14 October 1943. 600 Jews struck dead a dozen SS officers and guards, tore down the barbed wire fences and fled over a field of landmines into the forest. In the face of all odds, over 300 prisoners made it to the safety of the forest. As a result, fifty of these men and women were able to survive the war. Richard Rashke tells the story of Sobibor, based on his meticulous research and interviews with 18 of the survivors. He focuses on the stories of the victims. “Flucht aus Sobibor” was originally published in America as “Escape from Sobibor” in 1983. In 1998, little notice was paid to a German translation that was published. To mark the 70th anniversary of the uprising in Sobibor, Richard Rashke has published a revised and extended American edition that will now be published in German. The book was turned into a film starring Rutger Hauer in the leading role. This edition also contains the entire collection of Joseph Richter’s Sobibor drawings.

Oktober 1943 kam es zum Aufstand in Sobibor. 600 JüdInnen erschlugen ein Dutzend SS-Offiziere und Wächter rissen den Stacheldraht-Zaun nieder und flüchteten über ein vermintes Feld in die Wälder. Entgegen aller Wahrscheinlichkeiten schafften es mehr als 300 Gefangene in die rettenden Wälder. Fünfzig jener Männer und Frauen konnten so bis zum Kriegsende überleben. Richard Rashke erzählt, basierend auf akribischen Recherchen und Interviews mit 18 Überlebenden, die Geschichte von Sobibor. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei die Lebensgeschichten der Opfer. „Flucht aus Sobibor“ ist im amerikanischen Original 1983 als „Escape from Sobibor“ erschienen. 1998 wurde eine kaum beachtete deutsche Übersetzung veröffentlicht. Anlässlich des 70. Jahrestages des Aufstands in Sobibor hat Richard Rashke eine aktualisierte und erweiterte amerikanische Ausgabe publiziert, die nun auf Deutsch herausgegeben wird. Das Buch wurde auch mit Rutger Hauer in der Hauptrolle verfilmt. In der Ausgabe werden auch die gesamten Sobibor-Zeichnungen von Joseph Richter abgedruckt.
