Project

Description

The aim of this analysis is to portray different forms of cooperation by the institutions involved, whose interplay led to an “efficient” implementation of Nazi health policies. The field subject to investigation, forced sterilization and “voluntary castration” – whereby this was a coercive measure despite being designated “voluntary” –, sheds light on an area of social and political involvement by the University of Innsbruck. The knowledge thus gained is not only of university interest; it also contributes to the way in which the victims of forced sterilization and forced castrations are dealt with in terms of a culture of remembrance. In doing so, the focus lies on an innovative line of questioning, which builds on the few existing results and brings new aspects into focus. The key involvement of the University of Innsbruck in the regional genetic health policies is of fundamental interest. On the one hand, in order to portray how this educational institution positioned itself within the Nazi health system and what tasks and room for maneuver were given to its representatives, and on the other, to comprehensively show for the first time the different areas of activity of the Innsbruck University institutes and clinics in this regard and to shed light on the influence of these institutions in the western Austrian Nazi health system.
