Reunion Hohenems 2017 Treffen der Nachkommen der jüdischen Familien aus Hohenems

Project

Description

The Jewish community in Hohenems was violently eradicated between 1938 and 1941; its last members were deported to the death camps. At the same time the border at the Alter Rhein was shaped by a mass movement of refugees into Switzerland. Right up until the end of the war there were repeated dramatic attempts to flee the Third Reich there. The last victim at the border was the Jewish resistance fighter Hilda Monte, who was shot in April 1945 near Feldkirch during an attempt to bring information to the organization O5 in Switzerland. Following reunions in 1998 and 2008 these families are planning to meet again in the anniversary year 2017 in order to contribute towards strengthening the connection between the past of Austrian Jews and a future of mutual recognition and peaceful coexistence. The event will be documented in a publication, which will come out in 2018.
