Final Destination Hartheim – Euthanasia Under the Third Reich. Eleven fates from six villages to the east of Innsbruck – a closer look

Endstation Hartheim – Euthanasie im Dritten Reich. Elf Schicksale aus sechs Dörfern östlich von Innsbruck – Eine Annäherung

 

This project aims to raise awareness of euthanasia under the Third Reich, specifically the awareness of the village residents, using concrete examples from the village. Firstly, surviving relatives can come to terms with their experiences in this way; in one case the family knew nothing of the case because their relatives of that time had been ashamed and kept it a secret. Secondly, victims are rescued from anonymity. The identities of eleven victims of euthanasia were returned to them through this project. Each one represents a different group of victims. By talking to the relatives their lives could be reconstructed in a fair amount of detail. These biographies are to be preserved for posterity as an important testimony. In addition to the biographies the publication also documents the processes and outcomes of the evaluation work and the creation of a culture of remembrance.

Das Projekt zielt darauf ab, Euthanasie im Dritten Reich ins Bewusstsein zu bringen, im konkreten Fall ins Bewusstsein der Dorfbevölkerung anhand von konkreten Fällen aus dem Dorf. Einerseits können auf diese Weise noch lebende Angehörige ihr Erlebtes aufarbeiten, in einem Fall wussten die Angehörigen gar nichts davon, weil diese Tatsache von den damaligen Verwandten aus Scham vor ihnen verschwiegen wurde, andererseits wird das Opfer aus der Anonymität hervorgeholt. Elf Euthanasieopfern wird in dem vorliegenden Projekt wieder Gestalt gegeben. Jedes steht stellvertretend für eine Opfergruppe. Durch Gespräche mit Angehörigen konnte ihr Leben mehr oder weniger detailreich rekonstruiert werden. Diese Lebensgeschichten sollen der Nachwelt als wichtiges Zeugnis erhalten bleiben. Zusätzlich zu den Biografien beinhaltet die Publikation auch die Dokumentation von Prozessen und Ergebnissen der Aufarbeitung, die Entstehung einer Erinnerungskultur.
