In his dramas and prose, Ödön Horváth viewed himself as a chronicler of his age and worked at continually unmasking consciousness through literature. In his texts he exposes the close interweaving of erotica, politics and economics. Starting with his early political dramas, followed by his famous folk plays, up to and including his later work, the exhibition at the Theater Museum seeks to portray the fundamental ingredients of Horvath’s drama and poetics. It will also examine the key locations of his work, such as Rummelplatz and the tavern, as well as central subjects such as the middle classes and the economic threat to which they are subject, the language masks, gender roles, relationship models and the political substance and explosiveness of Horváth’s work.

Ödön von Horváth hat sich in seiner Dramatik und Prosa als Chronist seiner Zeit gesehen und an einer steten Demaskierung des Bewusstseins mittels Literatur gearbeitet. In seinen Texten decouvriert er die enge Verflechtung von Erotik, Politik und Ökonomie. Angefangen bei seiner frühen politischen Dramatik über die berühmten Volksstücke und bis hinein in das Spätwerk versucht die Ausstellung im Theatermuseum wesentliche Ingredienzien der Horváth‘schen Dramatik und Poetik vor Augen zu führen. Dabei soll es um zentrale Schauplätze wie den Rummelplatz und das Wirtshaus sowie zentrale Themen wie den Mittelstand und seine ökonomische Bedrohung, um Sprachmasken, Geschlechterrollen, Beziehungsmodelle und um die politische Substanz und Brisanz der Werke Horváths gehen.
