Emile Zuckerkandl was born in Vienna in 1922 and was the only grandchild of the famous cultural journalist, Bertha Zuckerkandl, who became known for her Viennese salons. She is still considered one of the most important female figures of the Austrian fin de siècle. In his grandmother’s salons, Emile became witness to a period in which Vienna was a cultural and scientific metropolis, which was irretrievably destroyed by the Nazis. His eventful life, full of twists and turns and rich with acquaintances is an ideal point of departure for a film that will portray a vivid image of the 20th century history of Austria with all its highs and lows. The essay-like film seeks to provide a comprehensive and multi-faceted portrait of a lost era and to explore the repercussions of this loss.

Emile Zuckerkandl wurde 1922 in Wien geboren und war der einzige Enkel der berühmten Kulturjournalisten Berta Zuckerkandl, die durch ihre Wiener Salons bekannt wurde. Sie gilt heute als eine der bedeutendsten Frauengestalten der österreichischen Jahrhundertwende. In den Salons seiner Großmutter wurde Emile Zeuge einer Epoche, in der Wien eine kulturelle und wissenschaftliche Metropole war, die durch den Nationalsozialismus unwiederbringlich zerstört wurde. Sein an Ereignissen, Wendungen und Bekanntschaften reichhaltiges Leben ist ein idealer Ausgangspunkt für einen Film, der ein lebendiges Bild der Geschichte Österreichs im 20. Jahrhunderts mit all seinen Höhen und Tiefen zeichnen kann. In einem essayistischen Film soll anhand von Emiles Lebensgeschichte ein umfassendes und vielschichtiges Portrait einer verlorenen Zeit geschaffen und die Auswirkungen dieses Verlustes erkundet werden.
