This scholarly project is dedicated to the Jewish Viennese garden architect and gardener Helene Wolf. The subjects of the study are Wolf's design project for the new Jewish cemetery at Gate 4 of Vienna's Central Cemetery (1928) and her work in gardening retraining (1938-1939). Central research questions: What did the design for the Jewish cemetery look like? How were the spatial and design transitions from the Jewish section to the rest of the cemetery designed? How did this project develop in the interaction between the garden architect, the architect and the religious community? How was the building project handled and executed? Who subsequently maintained the complex? What conclusions can be drawn from the design, genesis of the project and its history about the current state and further development of the cemetery complex? How did Helene Wolf's work for the Jewish Community develop after March 1938? What role did Wolf play in the gardening retraining courses? What significance did this activity have for Wolf, who was herself persecuted from March 1938 and forced to give up her horticultural business? Which persons were employed in the horticultural retraining courses or were in training? How important were private and professional networks during this phase?

Das vorliegende wissenschaftliche Projektvorhaben widmet sich der jüdischen Wiener Gartenarchitektin und Gärtnerin Helene Wolf. Gegenstand der Untersuchung sind Wolfs Entwurfsprojekt für den neuen jüdischen Friedhof beim Tor 4 des Wiener Zentralfriedhofs (1928) sowie ihre Tätigkeit in der gärtnerischen Umschulung (1938-1939). Zentrale Forschungsfragen: Wie sah der Entwurf für den jüdischen Friedhof aus? Wie wurden die räumlichen und gestalterischen Übergänge von der jüdischen Abteilung zum Restfriedhof ausgebildet? Wie entwickelte sich dieses Projekt im Zusammenspiel zwischen Gartenarchitektin, Architekt und Kultusgemeinde? Wie wurde das Bauprojekt abgewickelt und ausgeführt? Wer pflegte in der Folge die Anlage? Welche Rückschlüsse ermöglichen Entwurf, Projektgenese und Geschichte auf den heutigen Zustand und die weitere Entwicklung der Friedhofsanlage? Wie entwickelte sich Helene Wolfs Tätigkeit für die IKG ab März 1938? Welche Rolle spielte Wolf in den gärntnerischen Umschulungskursen? Welche Bedeutung hatte diese Tätigkeit für Wolf, die ab März 1938 selbst verfolgt und zur Aufgabe ihre Gartenbaubetriebes gezwungen wurde?
