Description

2018 marks the 100th anniversary of Gustav Klimt's death. This is a time to take stock of all the restitutions of his works to their rightful owners and their heirs. "Hostile Powers" traces a prominent case in exemplary fashion - that of the Beethoven Frieze. The Beethoven Frieze, a monumental cycle of paintings by Gustav Klimt painted for an exhibition at the Vienna Secession in 1902, was in the possession of the collector couple August and Szerena Lederer from 1915 and was expropriated by the National Socialists in 1938. Although it was returned to their heir Erich Lederer after the end of the war, he was not granted an export permit. This remained unchanged for decades: in 1972 he finally sold the frieze to the Austrian state for a modest 15 million shillings. Even many years later, in 2015, after the so-called "Art Restitution Act" came into force, the connection between the export ban and the sale was deliberately ignored. The frieze was not returned to the heirs of Erich Lederer.

2018 jährt sich der Todestag Gustav Klimts zum 100. Mal.
