Project

Description

A primary goal of the Nazi regime was to fully control who participated in the art business on the basis of racial criteria, ideological premises, bureaucratic radicalization and rigid clientele policies. The contamination of art and its reception with normative selection criteria and regulations brought state terror into the field of culture. In addition to aspects of well-known names such as Werner Berg, Arnold Clementschitsch, Josef Dobner, Anton Kolig, Switbert Lobisser, and Karl Truppe, which have not yet been examined in detail, this study focuses on "minor masters" such as Otto Bestereimer, Heinrich Ebner, Hans Kleinert, Josef Prokop, and Kurt Weiß, as well as their activities in the pronounced patronage system and the network of relationships institutionalized by the Nazi art establishment through the Kunstverein für Kärnten. Further topics are the obvious continuities in the field of art creation and art criticism after 1945 as well as the problem of Nazi art theft and the partly compliant involvement of Carinthian art historians (Walter Frodl, Bruno Grimschitz).
