Description

Born into a Jewish family in Vienna in1924, in 1938 Alfred Bader was able to flee the National Socialists to England, where he was interned as an “enemy alien” in 1940 and transferred to a Canadian camp for prisoners of war. After completing his degree in technical chemistry, which he started on 1941 at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, he studied at Harvard and was a researcher for the “Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company”. Bader was the co-founder of the company Aldrich in Milwaukee, which today, under the name Sigma-Aldrich, is the world’s number one supplier of chemicals for research.

1924 als Sohn jüdischer Eltern in Wien geboren, konnte Alfred Bader 1938 vor den Nationalsozialisten nach England flüchten, wo er 1940 als 'feindlicher Ausländer' interniert und schließlich in ein kanadisches Kriegsgefangenenlager überstellt wurde. Nach Abschluss seines 1941 begonnenen Studiums der Technischen Chemie an der Queens Universität in Kingston, Ontario, folgten ein Studium in Harvard und Forschungsarbeiten für die 'Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company'. Bader war Mitbegründer des Unternehmens Aldrich in Milwaukee, das heute, als Sigma-Aldrich, der weltweit größte Zulieferer von Chemikalien für die Forschung ist.
