So far, more than 2,000 young Austrians have chosen the memorial service and have completed their military service in this way. Only since last year has the Service Abroad also been open without restriction to women and volunteers. Nevertheless, this important alternative to military and civilian service is hardly known to the public. For this reason, the freelance journalist and memorial service alumnus René Laglstorfer visited numerous foreign service posts around the world on the occasion of the round anniversary and recorded the formative experiences of his successors. The resulting "World Travel Book" is a search for traces around the globe and reports on the experiences and encounters of the "young ambassadors of Austria" on five continents - including Holocaust museums in the USA, Australia and Canada, a children's village in Cambodia, a circus project for street children in Costa Rica, a Tibetan environmental project in India and much more. 25 years of service abroad - an adventure with the goal of making the world a little bit better.

Bisher haben mehr als 2.000 junge Österreicher den Dienst für den Gedenkdienst gewählt und auf diese Art und Weise ihre Wehrpflicht abgeleistet. Erst seit dem vergangenen Jahr steht der Auslandsdienst auch Frauen und Freiwilligen ohne Einschränkung offen. Dennoch ist diese wichtige Alternative zu Bundesheer und Zivildienst in der Öffentlichkeit kaum bekannt. Aus diesem Grund hat der freischaffende Journalist und Gedenkdienst-Alumnus René Laglstorfer anlässlich des runden Jubiläums zahlreiche Auslandsdienst-Einsatzstellen in aller Welt besucht und die prägenden Erfahrungen seiner Nachfolger aufgezeichnet. Das daraus entstandene „Weltreise-Buch“ ist eine Spurensuche rund um den Globus und berichtet von den Erlebnissen und Begegnungen der „jungen Botschafter Österreich“ auf fünf Kontinenten – darunter Holocaust Museen in den USA, Australien und Kanada, ein Kinderdorf im Kambodscha, ein Zirkusprojekt für Straßenkinder in Costa Rica sowie ein tibetisches Umweltprojekt in Indien und vieles mehr. 25 Jahre Auslandsdienst – ein Abenteuer mit dem Ziel, die Welt ein kleines Stück weit besser zu machen.
