Description

The fate of Karl Horvath, born in 1916 in Loipersdorf, Burgenland, a "gypsy" from Loipersdorf, Burgenland, reflects not only many of the upheavals in the first decades after the fall of the Habsburg Monarchy, but also the continuity of the persecution and criminalization to which the Roma ethnic group was subjected in those days. From the attempts to create their own "gypsy legislation" long before the "Anschluss" to the manhunt during the Nazi dictatorship and the discrimination of the post-war period, a virtually unbroken series of exclusion strategies of varying degrees of violence, which are condensed and concretized in the fate of an individual in an exemplary manner, extends from the "Gypsy legislation" long before the "Anschluss". Horvath's struggle for rehabilitation, his subsequent struggle for compensation in the face of a bureaucracy that was only too willing to return to business as usual as quickly as possible, to read about in Horvath's act of victim welfare, how a family’s memories of him, which took him in after his acquittal remaining until his death in 1971, complete a picture of life that is at once singular and at the same time can stand paradigmatically for Austria's 20th century. The reconstruction of Horvath's biography is supplemented by explanatory chapters on the historical background, illuminating the present status quo in Horvath's birthplace Loipersdorf as well as the transformation that his second home, the Zöhrdorfer Feld in Linz, has undergone to this day.
