On 1 April 1938 a group of 150 detainees was transported to Dachau. It contained, among others, members of the Austrian government party the Fatherland’s Front, as well as their political opponents, Social Democrats and Communists and a large group of well-known writers, artists and businessmen. Many of those who survived the concentration camp terror of the Nazis helped build the Second Republic. As such, they created a new Austria that has become a contested homeland for people from all areas of the political spectrum. The list of detainees was printed in the form of a transport list of the Gestapo. As a result of research carried out in recent years by the Documentation Centre of Austrian resistance it has been possible to collected basic biographical details of the majority of these inmates. Building on this research, this project plans to produce biographies for all of the inmates on the so-called “celebrity transport” and collect photos of them from public archives and private collections. The outcome will be presented to the public as a book published by the victims’ organizations (to be completed in the first quarter of 2019) and in the form of a website.

Am 1. April 1938 wurde ein Transport mit 150 Verhafteten nach Dachau zusammengestellt. Darunter befanden sich unter anderem Angehörige der österreichischen Regierungspartei Vaterländischer Front, aber auch deren politische Gegner, Sozialdemokraten und Kommunisten, sowie eine große Gruppe bekannter jüdischer Schriftsteller, Künstler und Wirtschaftstreibender. Unter jenen, die den KZ-Terror der Nazis überlebten, haben viele die Zweite Republik mit aufgebaut. Damit war ein neues Österreich entstanden, das für alle politischen Richtungen eine unumstrittene Heimat geworden ist. Die Liste der Häftlinge wurde in Form eines Faksimiles der Transportliste der Gestapo gedruckt. Durch Recherchen im DÖW ist es in den letzten Jahren gelungen, zur Mehrzahl der Häftlinge biografische Eckdaten zusammenzutragen. Aufbauend auf diese Recherchen sollen im Rahmen des hier beantragten Projekts Biografien aller Häftlinge des „Prominententransports“ erstellt und Fotos dieser Personen in öffentlichen Archiven sowie Privatsammlungen zusammengetragen werden. Das Ergebnis soll sowohl als Buchpublikation der Opferverbände (die Fertigstellung soll im ersten Quartal 2019 erfolgen) als auch in Form eines Web-Auftritts der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt werden.
