Remembrance – a work in progress. An expositary photographic exploration of the renovation work for the new Austrian exhibition at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial

During the scientific curation preparations for the renewal of the Austrian exhibition at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum, the “Association for a Culture of Remembrance” is also called on to further develop the contents of the project and to publicize it in Austria. It is planned that the artistic duo Anderwald and Grond will follow photographically the transformation process of Block 17 at the State Museum of the Auchwitz-Birkenau Memorial, where the new Austrian exhibition with be displayed, in the project “Construction site: Remembrance”. In the spirit of artistic investigation their photographic work will record, communicate and transform the facts of the site, their exposure, removal, restoration and renewal. In a process of ongoing exchange between the artists and curators, they will reflect on and analyze the renewal process. The resulting scientific and artistic body of work will form the basis for the development of an artistic and scientific project. In addition to the book project the project “Construction site: Remembrance” is also planned as an exhibition. Ideally the photos taken for the project will be presented in Vienna, preferably to the public, at the same time as the opening of the Austrian exhibition at the memorial, in order to create a space for discourse about proximity and distance between Austria and Auschwitz and, further, about the Austrian culture of remembrance.

Im Zuge der kuratorisch-wissenschaftlichen Vorbereitungen für die Neugestaltung der österreichischen Ausstellung im Museum von Auschwitz-Birkenau ist der „Verein für Erinnerungskultur" auch aufgefordert, das Projekt inhaltlich zu vertiefen sowie in Österreich bekannt zu machen. Das Künstlerduo Anderwald und Grond sollen im Projekt „Baustelle Erinnerung“ fotografisch den Prozess der Transformation des Blocks 17 im Staatlichen Museum der Gedenkstätte Auschwitz-Birkenau, in dem sich ab Winter 2019 die neue österreichische Ausstellung befinden wird, begleiten. Im Sinne einer künstlerischen Forschung wird ihre fotografische Arbeit die Fakten des Orts, ihre Freilegung, Entfernung, Restaurierung und Umgestaltung aufnehmen, kommunizieren und transformieren. Im steten Austausch zwischen Künstler/innen und Kurator/innen wird dieser Prozess reflektiert und aufgearbeitet. Aus dem entstehenden wissenschaftlichen und künstlerischen Werkkörper wird eine künstlerisch-wissenschaftliche Publikation entwickelt. Über das Buchprojekt hinaus soll das Projekt „Baustelle Erinnerung“ schließlich in eine Ausstellung münden. Idealerweise gleichzeitig mit der Eröffnung der neuen österreichischen Ausstellung in der Gedenkstätte Auschwitz-Birkenau sollen die im Projekt entstandenen Bilder in Wien, bestenfalls auch im öffentlichen Raum präsentiert werden, um so einen Diskursraum über Nähe und Entfernung von Auschwitz und Österreich und in weiterer Folge über die österreichische Gedenkkultur heute zu eröffnen.
