Rudolf Friemel (born 11 May 1907 in Vienna, died 30 December 1944 in Auschwitz concentration camp) is probably one of the most well-known prisoners in Auschwitz – his biography is a story of political engagement and resistance against Fascism. Following the occupation of France by the German Wehrmacht, Friemel volunteered to be transported back to Vienna and was arrested by the Gestapo. The Gestapo opened a file on him and transferred him to Auschwitz on 2 January 1942, where he was an inmate in the so-called main camp Auschwitz I with inmate no. 25173 until his execution on 30 December 1944. During the course of the renewal of the Austrian exhibition at the State Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau the exhibition team made contact with the grandson of Rudolf Friemel, Rodolphe, in Southern France and helped have the estate of Rudolf Friemel brought to the Vienna Library at the City Hall in 2018. An exhibition on this very special estate is to be held at the Vienna Library (planned opening 24.01.2019). A rough inventory to the estate has already been produced by Barbara Stauding and Hannes Sulzenbacher. A publication in memory of Rudolf Friemel will accompany the exhibition. In addition to the documents from the estate, letters of Rudolf Friemel that are held in the archive of the State Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau will be shown.

Rudolf Friemel (geboren am 11. Mai 1907 in Wien, gestorben am 30. Dezember 1944 im KZ Auschwitz) ist wohl einer der prominentesten österreichischen Auschwitz-Häftlinge – seine Biographie eine Geschichte des politischen Engagements und des Widerstands gegen den Faschismus. Nach der Besetzung Frankreichs durch die deutsche Wehrmacht, meldete sich Friemel 1941 zum Rücktransport nach Wien und wurde von der Gestapo festgenommen, die ihn in Wien erkennungsdienstlich erfasste und am 2. Jänner 1942 in das KZ Auschwitz überstellte, wo er bis zu seiner Hinrichtung am 30. Dezember 1944 Häftling im sogenannten Stammlager Auschwitz I mit der Häftlingsnummer 25173 war. Im Zuge der Recherchen zur Neugestaltung der österreichischen Ausstellung im Staatlichen Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau hat das Ausstellungsteam Kontakt mit dem Enkel Rudolf Friemels, Rodolphe, in Südfrankreich aufgenommen und schließlich dazu beigetragen, dass der Nachlass von Rudolf Friemel 2018 an die Wien Bibliothek im Rathaus kommen wird. Im Zuge dessen ist eine Ausstellung zu diesem besonderen Nachlass in den Räumen der Wien Bibliothek geplant (voraussichtliche Eröffnung: 24.1.2019). Ein Grobinventar des Nachlasses wurde von Barbara Staudinger und Hannes Sulzenbacher bereits erstellt. Eine Publikation zum Gedenken an Rudolf Friemel soll die Ausstellung begleiten. Neben den Dokumenten aus dem Nachlass sollen auch Briefe Rudolf Friemels, die sich im Archiv des Staatlichen Museums Auschwitz-Birkenau befinden, gezeigt werden.
