In Memory’s Kitchen. Essen und Exil. 25 Jahre Österreichische Exilbibliothek

 

The project about “memory’s kitchen” is not just about cooking and eating in the form of the basic provision of food and merely satisfying hunger; nor is it about fine cuisine. Rather, it is about eating on a social and a symbolic level in a historical context and its cultural location at the heart of the discourse. In ten chapters, the exhibition predominantly shows objects and materials from the collection of the Austrian Exile Library, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2018. In addition to photos, handwritten texts, personal documents and first editions of autobiographies and literary works, exile newspapers and functional texts such as recipe collections and cookbooks will be shown. The display will be enhanced with media stations (audio and video). Among other things, it will focus on the subjects of (Jewish) cuisine pre-1938; food and lack thereof in the camps; food and cookery while on the run, foreign cuisine/personal cuisine; places of hospitality in exile; cafés, restaurants, clubhouses; emigrants as cookbook authors and chefs; cookbooks and recipe collections in exile, émigré businesspeople and businesses in context; food as a motif in exile literature, art and film; remembering food: the second generation. A book will also be published containing essays and literary texts that have previously only been published rather obscurely or not at all.

In diesem Projekt über die „Küche der Erinnerung“ geht es nicht um Kochen und Essen als grundlegende Versorgung mit Nahrung und um das bloße Stillen von Hunger – aber auch nicht um Kulinarik. Vielmehr steht die soziale und symbolische Ebene des Essens im historischen Kontext, seine kulturelle Verortung im Mittelpunkt des Diskurses. Die Ausstellung zeigt in zehn Kapiteln vor allem Objekte und Materialien aus den Sammlungen der Österreichischen Exilbibliothek, die 2018 ihr 25-jähriges Bestehen feiern wird. Neben Fotos, Handschriften, Lebensdokumenten und Originalausgaben von Autobiografien und literarischen Werken werden Exilzeitschriften und Gebrauchstexte wie Rezeptsammlungen und Kochbücher gezeigt. Die Schau wird durch Medienstationen (Ton und Film) ergänzt. Der Fokus wird unter anderem auf folgende Themen gelegt: (Jüdische) Küche vor 1938; Essen und Mangel in den Lagern; Essen und Kochen auf der Flucht; Fremde Küche/Eigene Küche; Orte der Gastlichkeit im Exil; Cafés, Restaurants, Vereinsheime; Emigrantinnen und Emigranten als KochbuchautorInnen und Köche; Kochbücher und Rezeptsammlungen des Exils, emigrierte Geschäftsleute und Firmen im Kontext; Essen als Motiv in Literatur, Kunst und Film des Exils; emigrierte Geschäftsleute und Firmen im Kontext; Essen als Motiv der Literatur, Kunst und Film des Exils, Erinnerung an das Essen: die Zweite Generation. Es erscheint ein Begleitbuch mit Aufsätzen und literarischen Texten – die meisten von ihnen sind an entlegener Stelle erschienen oder blieben bisher unpubliziert.
