In summer 1938, after the “Anschluss”, St. Jakob became the only town in Carinthia where Nazi Party members measured the local population in order to prove that the Aryan race was also settled so far south. There are 3,200 measurement forms and 600 photos that document this undertaking. It was concluded that despite a remarkably high incidence of northern influences the residents of St. Jakob could largely be characterized as being a mixed population. The Slovene Cultural Association has chosen this subject as the main theme of its activities for the year 2018. Throughout the year, artistic interventions will take place in public spaces under the title “Measuring Office then and now”. They will draw attention –sometimes subtly, sometimes provocatively – to the exhibition planned for the fall, without explicitly naming it. Subject-related events will be held concurrently. In fall 2018 an exhibition will be developed in the St. Jakob town-center movie theater. The students at the St. Jakob New Middle School will be asked to identify connections between the historical measurement of people and the present day, which they will then use to design a poster with the help of the painter Snjezana Visnjic. The poster will be displayed at the Land Surveyors’ Office in fall.

Im Sommer 1938, nach dem Anschluss, vermaßen Mitglieder der NSDAP als einzigen Ort in Kärnten die Bevölkerung von St. Jakob, um nachzuweisen, dass die arische Rasse bis weit in den Süden hinein sesshaft ist. Über diese Tätigkeit gibt es 3.200 Vermessungsbögen und 600 Fotografien. Aus der ehemaligen Vermessung wurde geschlossen, dass die BewohnerInnen von St. Jakob trotz auffallend hoher nordischer Einflüsse den Charakter einer Mischbevölkerung aufweisen. Der Slowenische Kulturverein hat sich dieses Thema zum Schwerpunkt seiner Tätigkeit für das Jahr 2018 ausgesucht. Unter dem Titel „Vermessungsamt einst und jetzt“ finden im Laufe des Jahres 2018 künstlerische Interventionen im öffentlichen Raum statt. Diese deuten subtil, aber auch provokant auf die im Herbst geplante Ausstellung hin, ohne diese eindeutig zu benennen. Parallel dazu werden themenbezogene Veranstaltungen organisiert. Im Herbst 2018 wird in dem im Ortszentrum von St. Jakob stehenden Kino eine Ausstellung vorbereitet. Die SchülerInnen der Neuen Mittelschule (NMS) St. Jakob werden angesprochen, zum Thema Vermessung historische und aktuelle Bezüge herzustellen und mit Hilfe der Malerin Snjezana Visnjic in einem gemeinsamen Plakat zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Dieses Plakat wird im Herbst im Vermessungsamt ausgestellt werden.
