This book describes a life that in November 2018 will span a century and was characterized not only by expulsion, exile and personal setbacks but also by an autonomous will to start over and look to the future with optimism. Elsie Slonim was born in 1917 in New York and grew up in Baden near Vienna. She lived through two world wars, the Great Depression, Nazism, the birth of the State of Israel and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Today she lives in her house near Nikosia, which has stood in the middle of the restricted zone ever since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. She is the only civilian resident. Mrs. Slonim’s texts bear witness, serve as a warning and are also a source of strength at a time when things that had had once seemed to guarantee peace and freedom in our time are beginning to falter and Nazism is on the rise once more.

Dieses Buch zeichnet ein Leben nach, das im November 2018 ein Jahrhundert umfasst und von Vertreibung, Exil und persönlichen Rückschlägen gekennzeichnet war – aber auch von einem unabhängigen Willen, stets von neuem zu beginnen und optimistisch in die Zukunft zu blicken. Elsie Slonim wurde 1917 in New York geboren und wuchs in Baden bei Wien auf, sie hat zwei Weltkriege, die Weltwirtschaftskrise, den Nationalsozialismus, den Aufbau des Staates Israel und die türkische Invasion Zyperns aus nächster Nähe erlebt. Heute lebt sie in ihrem Haus in der Nähe von Nikosia, das seit der türkischen Invasion in Zypern im Jahr 1974 inmitten der Sperrzone steht. Sie ist die einzige zivile Bewohnerin. Die Texte Frau Slonims sind ein Zeitzeugnis, Mahnung und auch eine Kraftquelle, in einer Zeit, in der so manches, das in Europa scheinbar für immer Garant für Frieden und Freiheit gewesen zu sein schien, ins Wanken gerät und der Nationalsozialismus wieder neue Höhenflüge erlebt.
