When 21-year-old Walter Fantl returned to Vienna in July 1945 nothing remained of his former life except a wide leather belt: the only thing he had been allowed to keep after the selection at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Later, he was surprised to receive a suitcase full of family photos – it had survived the horrors that the people in them – his parents and sister, both grandmothers, uncles and aunts – did not. From then on, his second life is guided by remembrance. Today, Walter Fantl, former Auschwitz inmate, is one of the last survivors in Austria who can give an authentic account of the Holocaust. Until his 90th birthday he visited schools on a regular basis to tell students about his family’s persecution during the Nazi era and his survival. The book is intended as an additional account in the form of documentary prose, although the aim is not to document his experiences but to tell a story without using the medium of fiction. It can most closely be compared to the literary reportage genre.

Als der 21-jährige Walter Fantl im Juli 1945 nach Wien zurückkommt, ist ihm nichts von seinem bisherigen Leben geblieben als ein breiter Ledergürtel: das Einzige, was er nach der Selektion in Auschwitz-Birkenau behalten durfte. Später erhält er überraschend einen alten Koffer mit Familienfotos zurück – sie haben den Schrecken überdauert, die darauf zu sehenden Personen, Eltern und Schwester, die beiden Großmütter, Onkel und Tanten haben jedoch nicht überlebt. Die Erinnerung bestimmt fortan sein zweites Leben. Heute ist Walter Fantl, ehemaliger Auschwitz-Häftling, einer der letzten noch lebenden Zeitzeugen in Österreich, der authentisch vom Holocaust erzählen kann. Bis zu seinem 90. Lebensjahr ging er regelmäßig in Schulen, um jungen Menschen von der Verfolgung seiner Familie während der Naziherrschaft und seinem Überleben zu berichten. Das Buch soll als erzählender Bericht, in Form dokumentarischer Prosa abgefasst werden, wobei es nicht nur darum geht, zu dokumentieren, sondern vielmehr, die Geschichte zu „erzählen“, ohne sich der Mittel fiktiver Literatur zu bedienen. Das Genre der literarischen Reportage wird dem wohl am nächsten kommen.
