Rudolf Gelbard possesses the ability to describe his experiences vividly and enthrallingly. In the film he first leads the audience through the scenes of his childhood in Vienna, where he had to suffer humiliation as a “Jewish boy” after Hitler marched into Austria. He also experienced the cynically named “Night of Broken Glass” in Vienna up close and was witness to the arson and the desecration of the great synagogue in Tempelgasse. In October 1942 he was deported to Theresienstadt with his family. The film accompanies Rudolf Gelbard on a journey to Theresienstadt, which he was visiting for the first time since the war.

Rudolf Gelbard besitzt die Fähigkeit der anschaulichen und packenden Schilderung. Im Film führt er zunächst an jene Schauplätze seiner Kindheit in Wien, wo er die Demütigungen als 'Judenbub' nach dem Hitlereinmarsch 1938 erleiden musste. Er hat auch die unter der zynischen Bezeichnung 'Reichskristallnacht' stattfindenden Novemberpogrome in Wien hautnah erlebt und war Zeuge des Brandes und der Schändung der großen Synagoge in der Tempelgasse. Im Oktober 1942 wurde er mit seiner Familie nach Theresienstadt deportiert. Der Film begleitet Rudolf Gelbard auf einer Fahrt nach Terezin/Theresienstadt, das er zum ersten Mal seit dem Krieg besuchen wird.
